Greenwashing under scrutiny, legal audit of a global construction manufacturer’s product catalogues

Client: global manufacturer of building products |
The situation
EU regulations on unjustified environmental claims (so-called greenwashing) are tightening rapidly. Companies communicating their sustainability activities face increasing exposure to challenges from regulators, NGOs and competitors. The client, a large international manufacturer, needed certainty that its product and sustainability communications were legally sound under EU rules.
Our role
We conducted a comprehensive legal review of the client’s product portfolio and communications materials, verifying the accuracy of environmental claims. We prepared recommendations on claims substantiation, disclosure standards, and the compliant presentation of product attributes under EU consumer protection and environmental regulations.
The result
The client gained clarity on which claims are safe, which need modification, and which should be withdrawn — and acted proactively, before the issue was raised by an external party. A proactive stance on greenwashing is today the most effective form of reputational risk management.
Want to check whether your sustainability communications comply with EU law? We can help.

In this area, reacting when a problem arises is not enough. You need to act earlier.
