Restructuring a water and wastewater business model – strategic advisory for an environmental services operator

Client: chemical client, in parallel water and wastewater services operator |

The situation

Water and wastewater operators today face a double challenge: tightening EU water directives and historically complex contractual relationships with municipalities and third parties. The Board was dealing with risks arising from changing EU water directives and the complexity of existing contractual relationships with external parties. The existing model was generating regulatory and operational risks that,  without intervention could have materially affected the company’s operations.

Our role

We helped the Board restructure the business model for wastewater management, reducing regulatory and operational risks. We advised on adjusting operations to changing EU water directives and on a comprehensive restructuring of partner contracts. We worked directly with the Board, combining legal analysis with business risk assessment.

The result

The Board gained a clear picture of the risks and new legal frameworks to operate in compliance with current and upcoming EU regulations. The case illustrates what our advisory really means: we don’t describe the rules – we help manage them in a concrete business context.

Environmental protection

Environmental regulations affect not only compliance, but what matters most in business: the pace of investment, operating costs, and security. In this area, knowing what the law says is not enough. You also need to know how to translate it into concrete actions and sound decisions.
